Adults and Scholars grading schedule.

GROUP GRADING SCHEDULE

9TH May 2017

Dear Parents and Karateka

re:    JUNE GRADING  2017  –  WELGEMOED  DOJO

This year has started with a bang and once again it is time for our first grading of the year.   The standard of our karateka is good but there are some very young karateka who already have Blue or Yellow belts, who should only grade at the end of the year.  From Light green belt it takes 1 year to the next grading.  You will be informed about this decision in a letter in the next few weeks.   I would like to request the karateka to keep training and to attend the classes regularly.

Our first grading will be during JUNE at the WELGEMOED DOJO, next to the Bellville Golf Course.

According to new grading regulations in Japan all belts have changed from 2007.

  • 10th Kyu –      Orange belt
  • 9th Kyu –      Maroon belt
  • 8th Kyu       –      Light blue belt
  • 7th Kyu –      Dark blue belt
  • 6th Kyu –      Yellow belt
  • 5th Kyu –      Purple belt
  • 4th Kyu       –      Light green belt
  • 4TH Kyu plus –      Light green belt with dark green stripe
  • 3rd Kyu –      Dark green belt
  • 3rd Kyu plus –      Dark green belt with brown stripe
  • Two brown belts 2nd Kyu. 1st Kyu have a golden stripe on belt;
  • Thereafter follow the ten (10) black belts(Dan’s).

We normally wait 6 months between belts up to green belt and then twelve months between light green and dark green and dark green and brown belt. From green belt there are many more kata to learn and as there is one year between grades, we find students do not train hard for the first 6 months. I now have permission from Japan to bring in a stripe after light green and dark green so that we can have a grading every 6 months and we can also see in class what we have to prepare the students for.

SCHOLARS AN+D ADULTS:

Their first grading will be for the orange belt (10th Kyu).  The second grading will be for a Maroon belt (9th Kyu), etc. as mentioned above.

Karateka must be dressed in a clean karate-gi (uniform) before coming to the grading  – our space is limited. Karateka must be at the dojo at least 10 minutes early, to register at the counter and pay the registration fee.  THE GRADING FEE MUST BE PAID AT THE GRADING.

The belts are NOT included in the grading fee and are available at R60,00 each at the dojo.

Parents & family are more than welcome to attend the grading and are allowed to take photos and videos.  There will be a professional photographer present to take photos.  Visitors are requested to take off their shoes before entering the wooden floor area. Thank you for your co-operation.   If karateka cannot make the dates set for the grading, please phone my office to arrange for an alternate date.

We have a variety of Kyokushin clothing, Training equipment, Bedding and different Martial Arts weapons equipment for sale at our FIGHTING SPIRIT shop in Welgemoed.   Friends and family are welcome to wear our clothing.  We also have the colour belts and karate uniforms available.  The prices of uniform: Size 0000 – 0 – R400.00 and size 1 – 7 –R450.00  Please turn the page for the grading schedule.

Karate Greetings

Dear Parents and Karateka

NEWS LETTER – SECOND TERM 2017
I would like to welcome all our karateka back from their respective holidays and trust that you are well rested and ready to train hard again. I would like to take this opportunity to bring a few important issues and dates to your attention.

1. IMPORTANT DATES – DIARY

6 May 2017 WP KARATE TOURNAMENT (JNR &
SNR) Saturday 8h00 BELLVILLE VELODROME
19 May – 21 May 2017 INTERNATIONAL KARATE CAMP Friday 18h00 – Sunday 16h00 Okkie Jooste camp site

27 May 2017 GRADING STARTS Information to follow WELGEMOED DOJO

THE NEW TERM HAS STARTED AND I WOULD LIKE TO REMIND ALL PARENTS THAT FEES
ARE PAYABLE IN ADVANCE. FEES FOR 2ND TERM MUST BE PAID IN FULL NOT LATER THAN
30 APRIL 2017 (Except the clients who are on debit order)

TO ALL PARENTS WITH OUTSTANDING FEES
We as instructors feel that we can no longer spend our time and energy begging people for outstanding fees. There are still students who did not pay their fees for the first term. That is fees that should have been paid in January 2017 .
Students whose fees are not paid for the 1st term will be asked to sit out from NEXT WEEK.

I hope that you will understand and that we will receive your co-operation in this matter. We have an option of debit orders where you can pay per month instead of the terms fee that should be paid in full. An administration fee for late payments will be charged from now on: R50 after the first month and R100 after the 2nd month,

2. WP KARATE TOURNAMENT (JUNIORS & SENIORS) – 6 MAY 2017
We will host the above tournament at Bellville Velodrome on Saturday 6th May 2017.
Ward 70 will have a day of fundraising on that day and we were asked to be part of the proceedings. The positive side is that we will get a lot of spectators and publicity. There will also be a lot of activities like tables of “white elephants’ being sold as well as place to eat and some music as entertainment. The negative is that we will have some interruptions with noise. But I am sure we can work with the organizers who are organizing this event to raise funds for sport and other facilities in Ward 70 which is the part of Bellville north of the N1.
So far we had no tournament for our students this year and we cannot wait till the third term.
We will compete in kumite (sparring) . All students chosen by the instructors will receive a letter in the class from Monday 24th of April. Please speak to your instructor if you are unsure if your child should take part. Basically all of the smaller kids can take part in the kumite but in the older divisions from u11 years they need to be skilled to fight the higher grades. We have to protect the beginners against possible injuries.
Please do not contact the office before Tuesday 25 April as we have not done all the arrangements. Just keep the 6th of May open. As always the smaller kids will start from 8h00 and the bigger kids and seniors later. (Detail will be in the tournament letter)

3. KARATE UNIFORMS
The wearing of a karate uniform is compulsory and helps to ensure discipline in class and create a sense of belonging. Please try your utmost to buy the suit by the end of April 2017.
A karate suit that is specially made for our specific style are available from our “Fighting Spirit” Martial Arts shop in Welgemoed and the price is R400 for up to 8 years (size 0000, 000, 00, 0) and R450 for all the bigger uniforms from size 1 to 7.

All students from Grade 1 who started at the beginning of the year MUST have shin pads and gloves. This is to protect the karateka as well as the opponent from injuries. A full set of approved gloves and pads cost R350 at our shop. Please invest in that please. Preschool kids do not need the protectors.

4. INTERNATIONAL CAMP : 19 – 21 MAY 2017 – OKKIE JOOSTE CAMP SITE, STELLENBOSCH
Our International camp will take place at the Okkie Jooste camp site, STELLENBOSCH.
This annual International camp always proved to be very interesting and enjoyable. During the International camp we will learn new and interesting techniques from our visiting Japanese Instructors , while we will use the September camp to prepare the karateka going for brown and black belt for their grading. All karateka 8 years and older are welcome to attend the whole weekend’s training. Younger karateka can attend a day’s training on the Saturday. On Sunday afternoon we will have a grading from 13h30 for Senior instructors. Parents can fetch their children from 14h00. The grading will be for senior instructors and not open to public. Please remember that NO cellphones will be allowed on the camp. We will supply our numbers in case of emergency. ( No exceptions will be made)
These camps are compulsory for karateka who want to grade in December 2017 for their brown and black belts.

** Karateka must arrange their own transport for May camp (NO BUSSES) – Map is available. It is very easy to find. You drive up Merriman Ave past the Lanzerack hotel up to Jonkershoek. The camp is on the right opposite the fly fishing farm and visible from the road.

5. GRADING MAY – JUNE 2017
The Pre-Primary students will grade on 27th May 2017, while the scholars with white belts will start on the 3rd June 2017 . You will receive a full breakdown of dates / grading times by 1st week of May 2017

.
I hope that all karateka’s standard will improve a great deal this term. If you find that the school’s winter sport program clashes with the karate times, please phone our office or look at our website for alternative training times at nearby dojo’s. It is impossible to please everybody but I am sure that we can make a suitable plan. Your children will only experience the tremendous benefits of karate if they attend the classes on a regular basis.

Parents can just wear shorts and a T/shirt. Please come, it will be a lot of fun and there is no cost involved.

CLASS TIMES – GRADE 1’s
The grade 1’s will start with the other karateka, but will only actively train for 45 minutes until March 2017 (1st term). For the remainder of the class the young karateka can watch as they will learn the more difficult techniques. From April they will train for the full hour.

DISCIPLINE IN THE KARATE CLASSES
We ask that parents, when possible, NOT to attend these training classes on a regular basis as we have learned from past experience that parents distract the children. It is like trying to type while somebody is correcting you the whole time. We do not mind if parents watch for 10 minutes to show their interest, but we do not want parents sitting there day after day for the full length of the class. Parents are also requested to be quiet. If you want to discuss anything or make mobile phone calls, please step outside. Your co-operation will be appreciated.

LIFE LONG INTERNATIONAL REGISTRATION FEE – COMPULSORY (Not Pre-Primary children)
Karateka from Grade 1 must be registered in Japan. All students must please pay R150 and bring 1 passport size photo as soon as possible. We also need their full name and date of birth. If you have not yet done this, please do it now.

WE OFFER MORE THAN JUST KARATE : – No extra cost!! We urge all higher belts to join these classes:
WEAPON CLASSES Tuesday from 17h45 – 18h45 (Minimum age 10)
EXTRA KARATE CLASSES: Saturday mornings 08h30 till 10h00 (fighting class) and 10h30 – 12h00 (normal class)

GRADING – GREEN BELTS ;
In the past we did gradings from purple to light green and light green to dark green once a year. All the instructors felt that the year gap was too long and that many karateka eased off their training until about two months before their next grading. We will now have a system where we will grade every 6 months for a dark green stripe on the light green belt and a brown stripe on the dark green belt. We hope that this way we can keep the training momentum.

TRAINING CAMPS : MAY / SEPTEMBER 2017
These camps are a very enjoyable experience for our higher grades and are compulsory for karateka who want to grade in December 2017 for their brown and black belts. During the International camp we will learn new and interesting techniques from our Japanese Instructors, while we will use the September camp to prepare the karateka for their grading. Other karateka of lower grades are more than welcome to attend. The date has been confirmed from Friday 19 May at 18h00 till Sunday at 16h00 ( International Camp) and September ( Preparation for grading).

FACEBOOK INVOLVEMENT OF STUDENTS AND PARENTS
We would like to stay in touch and inter act with our karateka parents and students on a more regular and personal basis. Please like our Facebook Page: Kyokushin-kan Karate Do Organisation Africa on Fb. This will allow you to follow updates on recent activities as well as upcomming events.
